Pastel pink is arguably the most unforgiving color in the hair spectrum. It requires a near-white canvas to look true to tone, and because the molecule size is so small and the pigment load is low, it vanishes faster than you can say "bubblegum." I recently worked with a client, Maya, who moved into a pre-war apartment in Chicago in January of this year. She arrived at my studio with a beautiful Level 10 platinum base, but her pastel pink—freshly done just ten days prior—had shifted into a dismal, muddy orange-brown. She assumed her stylist had messed up the formulation. A quick test with water strips revealed the real villain: her water tested at a staggering 12 grains per gallon of hardness. When Hard Water Attacks Pastel Pigments

When these minerals encounter hair, they act as an oxidizer. Pastel pink is essentially a minuscule amount of red-violet pigment diluted by a lot of clear conditioner. Iron oxidizes the tiny red molecules in the dye, turning them into a darker, earthier version of themselves. That is why you get that muddy, "dirty penny" shade instead of a soft fade to blonde.

Maya’s hair felt gritty even after she washed it, which is the classic tactile sign of mineral buildup. Most people think the solution is a chelating shampoo, and while necessary occasionally, chelators are harsh and will strip the artificial pigment faster than the hard water will. Why We Avoided Purple Shampoo Completely

Application is Everything
